Committee of Supply 2023 debate, Day 6: Seah Kian Peng on Singapore’s social compact
In Parliament on Friday (Mar 3), Speaker Tan Chuan-Jin dealt with the expenditure estimates for the Ministry of Social and Family Development. MP Seah Kian Peng then rose to speak. He said Budget 2023 breaks from the past and gives new shape to Singapore’s social compact. First, social spending now accounts for over half of the Government’s Budget. Second, the tax burden falls most heavily on the rich as a form of public duty and equity. Finally, there are opportunities in Singapore’s investments in innovation, employability and progress for every worker. From the Forward Singapore conversations that have been going on for some time, Mr Seah asked the Social and Family Development Minister to share more on the critical pillars that need more attention to further strengthen the social compact.
