Committee of Supply 2023 debate, Day 6: Shahira Abdullah on help for single unwed mothers

01:11 Min

In Parliament on Friday (Mar 3), NMP Shahira Abdullah asked if there were any new statistics on the median and average monthly incomes of single unwed mothers. She asked if the Government could consider allowing these mums to claim the Working Mother’s Child Relief and Parenthood Tax Rebate, and granting them the Baby Bonus cash gift. Dr Shahira said although Singapore’s policies aim to encourage parenthood within marriage, penalising single unwed mothers will penalise their children too, exacerbating unequal access and reducing social mobility.
