Committee of Supply 2023 debate, Day 6: Shahira Abdullah on staff-child ratio in childcare and infant care
Many early childhood educators believe that a staff-child ratio of 1:3 or 1:4 is optimal for effective interaction, a manageable workload and lower stress levels, said NMP Shahira Abdullah in Parliament on Friday (Mar 3). She asked if the Ministry of Social and Family Development would consider reviewing the current staff-child ratio in childcare and infant care centres, which stands at 1:5. She also asked if there is data on why preschool teachers leave their jobs and what plans the ministry has to address the turnover rate.
