Committee of Supply 2024 debate, Day 1: Sylvia Lim on protecting undersea assets

01:48 Min

Singapore’s undersea assets such as submarine cables and gas pipelines are critical to the country’s everyday life and its economy. They can be targets for attack or sabotage during crises and can also be accidentally damaged during peacetime. The risks are more real with increased tensions in Asia and the South China Sea driven by US-China competition, as well as with growing maritime traffic. With all this in mind, MP Sylvia Lim asked the Defence Minister about Singapore’s ability to protect and repair its undersea assets both independently and with partners, as well as plans to enhance such capabilities. She spoke in Parliament on Wednesday (Feb 28).
