Committee of Supply 2024 debate, Day 2: Murali Pillai on Home Team's manpower strategy
In Parliament on Thursday (Feb 29), Deputy Speaker Jessica Tan dealt with the expenditure estimates for the Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA). MP Murali Pillai then highlighted the surge in tech-related crimes, and its impact on the workload of Home Team officers and their operating environment. He pointed out that the combination of high workload and the lure of the private sector constitutes a “warning sign” on the ability of the Home Team to attract and retain talent. He wanted to know how MHA intends to address its manpower constraints. He also stressed the need for officers to retain the human touch with the community and wanted to know how MHA will make its services more accessible, efficient and convenient for the public.
