Committee of Supply 2024 debate, Day 2: Nadia Ahmad Samdin on Singapore’s role in multilateral forums

01:37 Min

Geopolitical tensions around the world are high and threaten the foundation of a rules-based international order that is crucial to Singapore's existence, said MP Nadia Ahmad Samdin in Parliament on Thursday (Feb 29). She said Singapore has made efforts to speak up and participate at multilateral forums, but in a world where size and might threaten to dominate, peace must be actively built, not simply maintained. With global challenges to the multilateral system, she asked for Singapore's view on the effectiveness of participation at global forums such as the United Nations. In ASEAN, she wanted to know how Singapore is supporting efforts to strengthen integration between member states to ensure that the bloc remains relevant and fit for purpose. Finally, she asked how the Government can better expose and meaningfully engage Singaporeans - youths in particular - to have a better understanding of Singapore's approach to foreign policy and the roles and reach of multilateral organisations to galvanise action and create impact.
