Committee of Supply 2024 debate, Day 2: Zaqy Mohamad on 40th anniversary of Total Defence
More than 800 organisations in the public and private sectors took part in an inaugural Total Defence exercise called Exercise SG Ready in the past two weeks. It provided a context for Singaporeans to think about how they could respond in the face of crises and disruptions. Power, water and food supply disruptions were simulated in schools, offices and the heartlands and evacuation drills were conducted in some places. More than 160 businesses tested their continuity plans in the event of power failures and cyberattacks. About 12,000 members of the public also had the chance to visit Civil Defence shelters at three MRT stations to learn about procedures and how the shelters protect civilians in an emergency. These details were revealed by Senior Minister of State for Defence Zaqy Mohamad in Parliament on Thursday (Feb 29). He said the Ministry of Defence has planned a year-long campaign to raise Singapore’s threat awareness and strengthen resilience and readiness for crises and disruptions. An exhibition showcasing examples of Singaporeans putting Total Defence into action has been launched. In April, an inaugural Total Defence Convention involving local and international partners will be held. Players on the gaming platform Roblox can also learn about the six pillars of Total Defence through mini-games in the TD@Singverse virtual world.
