Committee of Supply 2024 debate, Day 3: Desmond Choo on growing the economy over the next decade

02:43 Min

How does Singapore intend to ensure its economy keeps growing for the next 10 years? MP Desmond Choo offered several suggestions in Parliament on Friday (Mar 1). He said Singapore must intensify capital investment and adoption of innovation by SMEs. He asked what plans there are to improve the take-up rate of A*STAR’s T-UP programme. Singapore must also ensure it has the necessary infrastructure and talent to enable companies to capitalise on artificial intelligence (AI) so that the country as a whole can improve productivity and continue to punch above its weight. Mr Choo said more local companies, including SMEs, also need to operate abroad to bring in income and job opportunities. This is particularly as Singapore is in Southeast Asia, one of the fastest-growing regions in the world.
