Committee of Supply 2024 debate, Day 4: Jamus Lim on leave for singles and family care
There remains an “asymmetry” between childcare and eldercare leave, said MP Jamus Lim. Speaking in Parliament on Monday (Mar 4), he also pointed out that the caregiving burden is disproportionately borne by women. He proposed family care leave - for a start, it can include two days of paid leave for the only child of aged parents, as well as singles living with elderly parents. He said while it may seem like an additional cost for businesses, the resulting improvement in economic security and well-being of these employees is more than likely to pay for itself in terms of elevated productivity and reduced turnover.
