MP Louis Chua said employers of work permit holders have been raising the alarm about surging costs of workers' accommodation. In Parliament on Monday (Mar 4), he said the median monthly rentals for a bed went up to S$420 last year from S$280 four years ago. He asked if there are ways to retain workers and increase worker productivity, rather than increase the number of workers. He said this will ensure that companies are able to access adequate accommodation at reasonable standards and prices without passing on the cost to consumers.
