Committee of Supply 2024 debate, Day 4: Pritam Singh on Shortage Occupation List
In Parliament on Monday (Mar 4), Leader of the Opposition Pritam Singh asked about the Shortage Occupation List (SOL) to gauge how effective it has been since it was introduced in September 2023. Among his questions - what percentage of Employment Pass (EP) applications so far have taken advantage of the bonus points granted under the SOL; whether the quantity or quality of applications to the relevant occupations has increased; which SOL jobs still lack applications or suitable candidates and why. Mr Singh said Singaporeans should also be trained to fill known talent gaps. He asked how the Ministry of Manpower works with the Ministry of Education and agencies such as SkillsFuture to “systematically nudge” locals into those occupations. Local workforce development has to be not just reactive but predictive, aligning closely with future industry needs, he said.
