Committee of Supply 2024 debate, Day 5: Ang Wei Neng on hospital and polyclinic capacity, adequacy of medical staff, vaping
In light of Singapore’s ageing population, is there is a need to expedite the construction of additional hospitals beyond those already slated for development? MP Ang Wei Neng, who raised this question in Parliament on Tuesday (Mar 5), wanted to know if the Ministry of Health (MOH) has plans to build more polyclinics in Jurong West. He also pointed out that there is room for an increase in the number of doctors and asked if MOH is prepared to collaborate with the Ministry of Education to increase vacancies in the medical schools of the local universities. Mr Ang also stressed the need to intensify efforts to raise awareness about the harms of vaping, promote responsible behaviour and push for strict enforcement. He suggested that the Health Sciences Authority tap on the strengths of agencies like the Central Narcotics Bureau and police in its anti-vaping efforts.
