Committee of Supply 2024 debate, Day 5: Carrie Tan on caregiver support and capacity-building
With a rapidly ageing population, more people find themselves having to juggle careers and caregiving. Support for them should be made widely available in their neighbourhoods and not only in healthcare settings, which is costly and unsustainable, said MP Carrie Tan in Parliament on Tuesday (Mar 5). She recommended that the Ministry of Health work with the Ministry of Social and Family Development to set up community-based caregiver resource centres in every neighbourhood, and start training people in caregiving and how to navigate the resources available. These centres would be best located next to polyclinics and hospitals. Ms Tan called for this to be done before a “care avalanche overwhelms a generation of Singaporeans”.
