Committee of Supply 2024 debate, Day 5: Cheryl Chan on assurance of home ownership

06:54 Min

In Parliament on Tuesday (Mar 5), Speaker Seah Kian Peng dealt with the expenditure estimates for the Ministry of National Development (MND). MP Cheryl Chan then told the House that it needs to ensure affordable housing for Singaporeans. She noted that housing supply has increased significantly, with a record 9,250 private housing units - the highest in a decade - released in 2023, as well as HDB’s 2024 target to complete 19,600 BTO flats, among other initiatives. She asked the National Development Minister to provide a holistic picture of how MND intends to address the housing demand in the next five years. She also wanted to know how more effort will be placed to support three groups of people for their housing needs - divorcees with special needs children, seniors who have no family support, as well as families with a foreign spouse.
