Committee of Supply 2024 debate, Day 5: Dennis Tan on urban heat and density
Measuring density by estate is important, said MP Dennis Tan. When you have high density in certain regions over others, what the Singaporean experiences is the rush of the crowd and this is exacerbated by the Government’s decentralisation strategy to reduce congestion by bringing jobs closer to homes, he said. Speaking in Parliament on Tuesday (Mar 5), he pointed out that higher population density is a key contributor to higher urban temperature. He urged the Housing and Development Board to evaluate the population density of all towns to ensure that each town’s population density is at a comparable healthy level. He said mitigation measures should perhaps be carried out to reduce the density in towns with higher density. He also wanted to know what is being done to reduce the urban heat effect for the denser towns.
