Committee of Supply 2024 debate, Day 5: Poh Li San on Age Well SG and use of PMAs

02:25 Min

What are the details of plans for the nationwide transformation of Singapore’s transport framework and design to enable the elderly to commute more conveniently and safely? How does the Ministry of Transport (MOT) intend to make use of the Age Well SG funding to make it easier and more comfortable for seniors to move around in their neighbourhoods? With more users of personal mobility aids (PMAs) and wheelchairs as the number of elderly increases, does MOT intend to widen pedestrian and shared paths and create parking spaces for PMAs, especially in older neighbourhood estates? These were some of the questions raised by MP Poh Li San in Parliament on Tuesday (Mar 5). Highlighting a growing trend in Sembawang West where some young people with no visible disabilities or health issues are also using PMAs, driving at high speed with little regard for the safety of others, Ms Poh expressed support for recommendations tabled by the Active Mobility Advisory Panel in December 2023 to impose medical certification requirements and speed limitations on PMAs. She asked MOT to share the timeframe to implement the recommendations.
