Committee of Supply 2024 debate, Day 6: Melvin Yong on early childhood education
In 2021, about 80 per cent of Singaporean children aged three to four living in public rental flats attended preschool - lower than the national average of 88 per cent. Citing the statistic in Parliament on Wednesday (Mar 6), MP Melvin Yong asked if this gap has been narrowed and what support, beyond financial subsidies, can be given to lower-income families to enrol their children in preschool. He also wanted to know how many preschool teachers have been recruited in the past three years and how the Government intends to improve their working conditions, step up training and reduce attrition.
