Committee of Supply 2024 debate, Day 6: Rahayu Mahzam on mentoring youths
Mentoring guides youths to realise their potential and creates a virtuous cycle when those who have benefited become mentors themselves, said Senior Parliamentary Secretary Rahayu Mahzam. She said mentoring programmes will be brought closer to more youths in the Malay-Muslim community. By the end of this year, at least one programme will be offered in each of the 11 M3@Towns. A new concept of “flash mentoring” will also be introduced. Ms Rahayu explained that it takes place over a shorter period and combines interest-based activities like sports and games with mentoring in areas of personal development, educational transition and career guidance. The aim is to lower barriers and reach 1,000 youths within a year. Equipping youths for the future was one of three areas Ms Rahayu identified to “build on the legacy” established by the M3 network so far. She also spoke about empowering the Malay-Muslim community to take ownership of their health and encouraging more to take up volunteerism. She spoke in Parliament on Wednesday (Mar 6).
