Committee of Supply 2024 debate, Day 6: Zaqy Mohamad on MENDAKI's role in improving education and professional development outcomes in Malay-Muslim community
Senior Minister of State Zaqy Mohamad said self-help group MENDAKI has engaged and supported close to 90,000 members of the Malay-Muslim community through its various programmes and schemes. He said one of MENDAKI's key pillars is to provide support for children and youth at all stages of education. Mr Zaqy, who is also MENDAKI's Deputy Chairman, shared the success of the KelasMateMatika (KMM) programme. He said the programme for preschoolers saw a 74 per cent increase in enrollment between 2022 and 2023. More KMM facilitators have also come on board, with the numbers tripling from about 50 in 2020 to more than 140 in 2023. He said the MENDAKI Tuition Scheme continues to be the backbone of the community’s educational programmes. Enrollment has increased by 15 per cent over the past five years to over 9,000 students in 2023. Aside from a strong educational foundation, the community’s success also needs a strong workforce that can secure good jobs and meaningful careers. Mr Zaqy said MENDAKI initiated the Professional Networks to, among others, support professionals in growing their networks and contribute back to the community. Today, there are nine Professional Networks, covering various industries like the green and digital sectors. Women who wish to return to the workforce after a career break are also not left out. MENDAKI's Women at Work programme equips them with the relevant skills and connects them with job opportunities.
