Committee of Supply 2025 debate, Day 2: Maliki Osman on aid to Gaza and expanding Singapore’s global network
Singapore has sent seven tranches of humanitarian aid to Gaza over the past 16 months and will continue to do what it can to ensure that help reaches those who need it most, said Second Minister for Foreign Affairs Maliki Osman. Speaking in parliament on Monday (Mar 3), he reiterated Singapore’s approach towards the conflict and why it has not taken a “stronger stance” against Israel as some Singaporeans want. Singapore - and many Arab countries, he noted - believe engagement rather than isolation is the best path forward to keep the prospects of a two-state solution alive. Dr Maliki also elaborated on Singapore’s efforts to deepen relations with the Middle East, including a new Strategic Partnership Council with Saudi Arabia. Singapore is also deepening links with Latin America, Africa and India. However, even as it seeks new opportunities further afield, its success and future remain inextricably tied to Southeast Asia, Dr Maliki said. He said with Malaysia, there is a “strong political will to work together on a win-win basis”. Singapore is also partnering Indonesia on both countries’ green transition and exploring new areas of cooperation with Brunei.
