In parliament on Thursday (Mar 6), MP Xie Yao Quan highlighted instances where employers may have terminated employees in ways that were calculated to fly under the radar of retrenchment, an act which he termed “stealth retrenchment”. Stating that mature workers in their 40s and 50s would likely be disproportionately affected by stealth retrenchments, he added that such retrenchments would not only profoundly affect these workers emotionally but also financially, especially if they are "sandwiched" between their children and elderly parents. “Retrenchment done in stealth adds salt to the wound and cuts even deeper,” he said. Mr Xie wanted to know what are the Ministry of Manpower’s plans to enhance job-matching support for mature workers and help them bounce back from setbacks, particularly for those who were told to resign, ostensibly on their own accord, but were in reality laid off.
