Committee of Supply 2025 debate, Day 5: Yip Hon Weng on productive longevity for senior workers

02:07 Min

In 2022, 31 per cent of residents aged 65 and above were employed, but nearly 69 per cent earned less than S$2,500 monthly. The old-age support ratio has plunged from six in 2014 to 3.5 in 2024. MP Yip Hon Weng shared these figures in parliament on Thursday (Mar 6), where he asked if Singapore is underutilising a workforce that “still has much to give”. He noted that while more seniors want to work, he wondered if the government is offering them the right opportunities. He also stated that lifelong learning is not just a buzzword for senior workers but the key to career reinvention. Mr Yip also asked how the government can better match skills to new roles, especially those in the gig economy, and pushed for courses tailored to seniors' interests and experience.
