Committee of Supply 2025 debate, Day 6: Gerald Giam on preventive dental care

02:05 Min

Singaporeans are not seeing their dentists regularly enough, said MP Gerald Giam. While more than half visit a dentist at least once a year, 40 per cent of those visits are for reactive treatment rather than preventive care. This can result in a need for more complex and costly procedures. Studies have shown that poor dental health is linked to a higher risk of cardiovascular disease and diabetes complications. Tooth loss among seniors also impacts their nutrition, social confidence and overall well-being, said Mr Giam. In parliament on Friday (Mar 7), he urged the government to review how dental subsidies are structured, expand MediSave coverage for essential treatments and integrate dental care into Healthier SG.
