Committee of Supply 2025 debate, Day 6: Mariam Jaafar on healthcare costs and closing gaps in mental and physical health
While efforts to contain long-term healthcare costs are ongoing, how is the Ministry of Health achieving cost efficiencies in the short term with current efforts, asked MP Mariam Jaafar in parliament on Friday (Mar 6). With public hospitals also serving private patients, she asked what the optimal mix is that takes into account access and affordability, financial sustainability, quality and equity, and not at the expense of wait times for subsidised patients. She asked how the ministry would ensure both the public and private healthcare sectors can work together to optimise resources and streamline patient care. On mental health, she said that there is a gap where mental healthcare and awareness have not been integrated into the Healthier SG framework.
