Committee of Supply 2025 debate, Day 7: Baey Yam Keng on greater inclusivity through sports and community participation through sports
The empowerment of persons with disabilities (PWDs) through sports participation represents one of the most meaningful aspects of Singapore's commitment to building an inclusive society, said Senior Parliamentary Secretary Baey Yam Keng in parliament on Monday (Mar 10). Sharing “encouraging” statistics which found that sports participation rate for PWDs has grown from 28 per cent in 2015 to 46 per cent in 2023, he noted that more can be done. He asked the Culture, Community and Youth Minister to provide an update on current and future efforts to empower people of different abilities through participation in sports together. Turning to the upcoming World Aquatics Championship 2025, he noted that hosting such major sporting events holds “great potential” in spurring Singaporeans to develop a strong interest in sports. He asked the minister to share the ministry's plans to engage Singaporeans of all ages and encourage them to be interested in sports, to support sports and to take up sports, by leveraging such world-class events.
