Committee of Supply 2025 debate, Day 7: Masagos Zulkifli on grooming the next generation of Islamic leaders
Students of the upcoming Singapore College of Islamic Studies (SCIS) will have opportunities to pursue post-graduate studies overseas. Those who are keen will “benefit from advanced standing” for programmes at foreign partner institutions, said Minister-in-charge of Muslim Affairs Masagos Zulkifli. SCIS will partner renowned Islamic institutions - Dar al-Ifta in Egypt, the University of Jordan and Al-Qarawiyyin in Morocco - for its Islamic studies pathway. Mr Masagos said these partnerships will also ensure that the college is globally relevant, while remaining responsive to the Singapore context. He noted that Singapore’s Malay-Muslim community looks to Islamic religious teachers and scholars - asatizah - for guidance in an increasingly complex society. The quality of asatizah therefore shapes the character of the community, he said. In parliament on Monday (Mar 10), he also spoke in detail about mosque development plans, updates on the Wakaf Masyarakat Singapura and progress in implementing a common salary guideline for asatizah.
