Committee of Supply 2026 debate, Day 2: Kuah Boon Theng on reducing attrition, retaining talent in legal sector

05:10 Min

Singapore has, for some time, been witnessing a hollowing-out of the legal profession. An inability to retain talent has profound implications as the country’s strong and trusted legal system supports its economy, provides stability, builds investor confidence and attracts foreign investment. NMP Kuah Boon Theng said this in parliament on Friday (Feb 27). She noted that around 80 per cent of law firms in Singapore are small firms, so a good number of practising lawyers are also small to medium-sized business owners. Ms Kuah said she hoped that in its plans to future-proof the legal profession, Singapore will look beyond technological solutions at issues relating to morale, career insecurity in the age of AI, and financial and business stress.
