Committee of Supply 2026 debate, Day 2: Sim Ann on strengthening Singapore's strategic resilience

15:30 Min

Small states like Singapore do not have to be passive bystanders and can do much to create strategic space for themselves, said Senior Minister of State for Foreign Affairs Sim Ann. One key strategy is for Singapore to strengthen and expand its partnerships with like-minded countries, she said in parliament on Friday (Feb 27). Ms Sim said beyond strengthening Singapore’s economic resilience and security, such ties bring tangible benefits to Singaporeans and its companies. She highlighted the upgrades in relationships with various countries. One of them is Japan - as they commemorate the 60th anniversary of diplomatic relations this year, they will deepen collaboration in areas like the digital economy, green transition and emerging technologies. Ms Sim said these partnerships give Singapore greater resilience and ensure that it remains relevant amongst major and middle powers.
