Committee of Supply 2026 debate, Day 2: Wan Rizal on Singapore's projection for defence spending

01:59 Min

When necessary, the government must invest in new capabilities to keep the Singapore Armed Forces (SAF) agile and resilient. But at the same time, the government owes it to Singaporeans to be prudent, as every dollar for defence is also a dollar not spent on other pressing priorities. MP Wan Rizal said this in parliament on Friday (Feb 27). Highlighting two questions for the Defence Minister, he wanted to know the projection for defence spending this year in absolute terms, and as a share of government expenditure and GDP. He also wanted to know how the Ministry of Defence and the SAF ensure cost effectiveness across major procurements and long-term programmes.
