Committee of Supply 2026 debate, Day 3: Dennis Tan on sleep health and later school start

03:01 Min

Speaking in parliament on Monday (Mar 2), MP Dennis Tan called for the Ministry of Education to set a national standard to synchronise school start times to 8.30am for primary, secondary schools and junior colleges, alongside an "integrated school day" specifically for primary school levels. He cited data from the 2024 Singapore Youth Epidemiology and Resilience Study, which showed that nearly 85 per cent of secondary school students feel unrested. He also noted that for younger children, getting the recommended 10 hours of sleep is a biological requirement for physical health and cognitive wiring.
