Bilingualism today cannot be sustained by schools alone. Languages weaken not when they are difficult to learn, but when they are no longer lived outside the classroom. For mother tongue proficiency to be sustained, Singaporeans must continually enrich the language environment so that children here use and enjoy the language in everyday settings.
