Committee of Supply 2026 debate, Day 4: Gerald Giam on closing youth employment gap

02:47 Min

School leavers face a challenging job market as AI automates many entry-level tasks, said MP Gerald Giam in parliament on Tuesday (Mar 3). He proposed setting up a Youth Wage Credit Scheme to incentivise micro and small enterprises to offer ITE, LASALLE, NAFA, polytechnic and university graduates their first permanent jobs. He said unlike GRIT traineeships, his proposal encourages permanent hiring from day one. It could also empower smaller businesses to offer more competitive wages and compete for talent against bigger firms.
