Committee of Supply 2026 debate, Day 4: Syed Harun Alhabsyi on stronger support for bilingualism and SEN students
The Ministry of Education (MOE) will increase funding for a wider range of Mother Tongue Language (MTL) activities and programmes. For Financial Year 2026 to 2030, the Mother Tongue Languages Learning and Promotion Committees will receive S$33 million in funding for programmes like songwriting, radio broadcasting, debate and digital content creation. Senior Parliamentary Secretary for Education Syed Harun Alhabsyi, who announced this in parliament on Tuesday (Mar 3), also outlined MOE's efforts to support students with Special Educational Needs (SEN). It will expand school capacity from the second half of 2026 through the early 2030s. It will partner with MINDS to set up campuses for three MINDS schools and relocate MINDS Woodlands Garden School to a larger interim site. It will also partner with APSN Education Services, Autism Association (Singapore) and St Andrew's Mission Hospital to set up three schools. By the 2030s, there will be 30 government and community-funded Special Education schools, able to serve around 30 per cent more students - at about 12,000.
