Committee of Supply 2026 debate, Day 4: Terence Ho on redesigning jobs

03:17 Min

While generative AI may pose risks to various white-collar occupations, jobs which require manual skills or dexterity remain comparatively resilient to automation, said NMP Terence Ho. Speaking in parliament on Tuesday (Mar 3), he asked if Singapore can be bolder in redesigning jobs such as nursing, security and skilled trades at scale so that they become occupations that young people aspire to pursue. It should develop roles that integrate “head, heart and hand competencies”, making them more resilient to AI and automation, as well as more appealing to Singaporeans, he said. He also stressed the need for stronger capabilities for human-centric job redesign, ensuring that AI augments human contribution.
