Committee of Supply 2026 debate, Day 5: Henry Kwek on accessible and affordable housing

11:42 Min

First-time home buyers, especially young families, have had their HDB housing needs met through aggressive building since Covid, said MP Henry Kwek in parliament on Wednesday (Mar 4). It is time to improve accessibility and affordability for others, he said. He identified six areas of focus including singles and large families, and ensuring the income ceiling keeps pace with rising wages and property prices. He also called for targeted support to maintain and upgrade ageing private condominiums. Mr Kwek added that Singapore must ensure it finds enough land to build homes, while actively replacing loss of greenery. Future land supply must also come from VERS, he said, which will require fair compensation and accessible financing to succeed.
