Committee of Supply 2026 debate, Day 6: Baey Yam Keng on developing multicultural arts to strengthen social cohesion

15:55 Min

Singapore is doing more to promote the development of multicultural arts, to strengthen cross-cultural understanding and deepen a shared identity. A new grant will make S$20 million available over the next five years to support practitioners and organisations in such initiatives. Learning about other cultures through the arts must also begin at a young age. So, schools will get more funding support to bring in artists to deliver these experiences. There will be more offerings in pre-schools and a two-year ethnic fusion dance programme at the secondary school level. Minister of State for Culture, Community and Youth Baey Yam Keng announced these moves in parliament on Thursday (Mar 5). The government is also exploring how engaging with the arts can enhance the well-being of young and old. Mr Baey also said more than 1.2 million Singaporeans have registered for the SG Culture Pass.
