Debate on President’s Address: Muhamad Faisal Abdul Manap on good politics
Good politics is necessary to improve harmony in Singapore and avoid polarisation and division, said MP Muhamad Faisal Abdul Manap. He pointed to three necessary approaches - creating a level playing field, allowing people to agree to disagree and avoiding intimidation or fear-mongering. Mr Faisal called for the position of constituency adviser to be given regardless of political party, saying resources such as those of the People’s Association currently go to the defeated PAP candidate in opposition constituencies. On agreeing to disagree, he noted that the Workers’ Party allowed its MPs to vote according to their conscience in the debate on Section 377A - which he said showed that the party accepts unity in diversity. Mr Faisal spoke in Parliament on Wednesday (Apr 19).
