Debate on President’s Address: Shawn Huang on riding on the strength of the ‘Singapore collective’

09:45 Min

Singapore must build a clear vision and imagine what the country and society will look like and how its people will work together to overcome challenges, said MP Shawn Huang. Speaking in Parliament on Wednesday (Apr 19), he said this vision must be inspiring, ambitious and achievable. Mr Huang said at the core of this continuous work is building a strong national identity and promoting social cohesion among citizens. It requires the active participation of individuals and communities at all levels of society, he added. Mr Huang said all Singaporeans can contribute to nation-building. This includes being an active and engaged citizen by participating in community events and initiatives, as well as volunteering and providing resources to help others in supporting policies and programmes that promote the common good. To collectively push the nation forward, Singaporeans must work together and empower one another, he said. This means setting aside differences and working towards a shared vision for a better future for all citizens, he said. It also means investing in education, innovation, infrastructure and creating a strong and competitive economy that can provide opportunities for all, he added. “There is strength in our Singapore collective and our community,” he said. He urged Singaporeans to work together to build a nation and home for future generations.
