Debate on President’s speech: Alex Yeo on improving well-being of young and old

17:53 Min

As children and youths grow up in a digital environment, aside from concerns about online safety, the harm caused to their overall well-being is well-researched and publicised, said MP Alex Yeo in parliament on Tuesday (Sep 23). He added that while legislative safeguards have been introduced, these may not be enough to shape behaviour and even if children’s access to the digital world can be limited, it will leave a void that needs to be filled. He suggested direct intervention by creating centres in the community to facilitate social activities and interaction among the young, and possibly co-locating these with Active Ageing Centres. Mr Yeo also spoke about the need for affordable healthcare to give seniors peace of mind. He called on the Government to consider reviewing and removing the means testing regime for seniors to apply for public healthcare subsidies.
