Debate on President’s speech: Denise Phua on moving Singapore society from fear to hope

16:26 Min

Singaporeans face some common fears today, such as AI disruption, the impact of upheavals in global stability and trade on Singapore’s economy and the rising cost of living. However, the country can actively work to turn fear into hope, said MP Denise Phua. For example, the government can ensure that technological revolution does not marginalise any segment of the population by funding human-centric services and mandating inclusive design. Social and financial safety nets can be updated by expanding protection for the most vulnerable workers, enhancing retirement adequacy and setting up an "affordability assurance body" to monitor the costs of essentials and guarantee their affordability upfront. AI could be harnessed to make personalised learning possible at scale for every citizen. There should also be equal access to lifelong learning for all, including those with special needs. Ms Phua spoke in parliament on Tuesday (Sep 23).
