Debate on President’s speech: Fadli Fawzi on a truly inclusive ‘we first’ society
Singaporeans have always been willing to work for the common good; in fact, Singapore’s success in nation-building is a testament to its citizens working together for the public well-being. MP Fadli Fawzi made this point in parliament on Monday (Sep 22). However, he raised the question of why Singaporeans “now appear to be more concerned about their personal achievements over the common good”. He pointed to two possible factors - the unintended consequences of meritocracy and “a growing sense of precariousness” that many Singaporeans feel. He urged the House to call on the Government to take the lead in ensuring that all Singaporeans can have a dignified life. Specifically, he said greater support is needed for the low-income elderly. The pursuit of a "we first" society is for naught, he added, if the "we" is not properly inclusive and allows certain groups of Singaporeans to lag behind.
