Debate on President’s speech: Murali Pillai on resilience, technology and people to secure a strong transport system
Singapore can build a strong transport system through three strategies. Firstly, through resilience - by enhancing its ageing infrastructure and making it robust and flexible to meet the needs of the population, which are increasing in volume and complexity. Secondly, by seizing opportunities from new technologies, while safeguarding against cybersecurity risks. Thirdly, through its people - by continuing to build a professional and adaptive transport workforce to ensure that its systems remain fit for purpose. Senior Minister of State for Transport Murali Pillai outlined these strategies in parliament on Friday (Sep 26). He pointed out that the rail system comprises many mechanical parts, each with specific lifespans, similar to everyday appliances. With different parts at different ages, ensuring the smooth operation of all trains becomes increasingly complex and challenging, he said. He pledged to keep the rail network running smoothly - through a combination of maintenance, refurbishments, or replacements where needed.
