Chengdu, the capital of Sichuan province, has been named one of China's happiest cities for 16 years in a row. In contrast to megacities like Beijing and Shenzhen – known for cut-throat and hyper-competitive work cultures – observers say Chengdu seems to appreciate the simpler things in life. Locals can often be found relaxing at public parks, where there are more than 1,500 across the city. But, some locals also say outsiders often overly romanticise Chengdu's lifestyle.
