Don Wee on Constitution of the Republic of Singapore (Amendment No. 3) Bill
The invitations to the President and ministers to take up key positions in foreign and international organisations are “testament to the good regard” in which Singapore is held, said MP Don Wee. Speaking in Parliament on Wednesday (Nov 22), he said having them on the seats of these bodies will bring “benefits and glory” to Singapore by providing the opportunity to present the country’s perspectives and advance its national interests. “Having a seat at the table makes a difference to Singapore,” he said. Mr Wee stressed the need to continue to promote Singapore well. He said the appointments of Singapore’s leaders to such institutions will enhance the country’s visibility and international standing and impact its progress as a nation. He also sought clarifications on the Bill. He wanted to know how the Government will ensure that such appointments will serve Singapore’s national interests. He also asked how the Government will ensure that the country’s leaders do not take on too many roles which may have a detrimental impact on their ability to fulfil their job requirements.
