Dozens of Indonesians protest national hero title for former President Suharto

03:15 Min

Dozens of Indonesians gathered outside the Culture Ministry in Jakarta to oppose a government proposal to name former President Suharto as a national hero. They argue that honouring Mr Suharto — a controversial figure — would distort the country's history. Mr Suharto, who died in 2008, ruled Indonesia with an iron fist for more than three decades after seizing power in 1967 following a failed coup attempt. His administration was marked by allegations of corruption and human rights abuses, including violent crackdowns on political dissent. Saifulbahri Ismail reports.
