Edward Chia on Maritime and Port Authority of Singapore (Amendment) Bill
Strong regulation should strengthen Singapore's competitiveness as a maritime hub, rather than simply adding another layer of compliance, said MP Edward Chia. So, a new regulatory framework should be clear, proportionate and predictable, while supporting competition, innovation and workforce transition. In parliament on Tuesday (Nov 3), Mr Chia said regulatory sandboxes must not become “a never-ending loop” of pilots for companies investing in new maritime technologies. He called for a transparent pathway from controlled trials to limited commercial operations and ultimately, wider deployment. Mr Chia added that the use of novel technologies will result in workforce transformation. He asked that workers get help to convert their experience into new skills suited for a more automated maritime environment.
