Edwin Tong on affordability of stall rental at Geylang Serai Ramadan Bazaar
The ongoing Geylang Serai Ramadan Bazaar was awarded to a consortium of operators after an open tender and it was not the bidder with the highest price. Successful tenderers must comply with terms set, including having to provide a conducive and safe environment for stallholders and patrons. They then set the rental rates. Bidders know these rates, as well as the operational details, in advance and can decide if they want to put in a bid. Culture, Community and Youth Minister Edwin Tong gave these details in Parliament on Friday (Apr 21). He was replying to an MP’s question. Mr Tong said since 2019, Wisma Geylang Serai has taken over the organising of the bazaar and is responsible for place-making and programming. At this year’s event, almost 700 stalls were taken up. A substantial number of stallholders had previously operated stalls there or at other trade fairs and “a fair number” took up more than one stall. A section was also set aside to support home-based businesses, with low-cost rental of S$55 a day.
