Election of Seah Kian Peng as Speaker of Parliament
MP Seah Kian Peng was elected Speaker of Parliament on Wednesday (Aug 2). On behalf of the House, Leader of the House Indranee Rajah congratulated Mr Seah and noted the "wealth of experience" he brings to the Chair. She described him as a strong advocate for the labour movement and highlighted his contributions in Parliament over the last 16 years. More importantly, he is “no stranger to the Speaker's Chair,” she said. Ms Indranee said following recent events and the circumstances in which the Speaker's Chair became vacant, it is imperative to ensure that MPs and Singaporeans can continue to have trust and confidence in the office of the Speaker, and be assured that the duties and functions of the Speaker will be carried out firmly, fairly and impartially. “With the Speaker’s seat filled, we can once again focus our attention on the pressing issues that are at the top of people's minds and push ahead with the Government’s agenda for the remainder of this term of Parliament,” she said. Mr Seah said the encouragement he has received has boosted his confidence and determination to carry out his duties. He urged Members to turn to the “paramount duty” to serve the people of Singapore. “I look forward with cautious optimism that even during spirited debates, you the honourable Members, will maintain the highest standards of decorum and conduct that are fitting for this esteemed House,” he said. *Audio issues inherent from source
