Eric Chua on staffing of Child Protective Service
The number of Child Protection Officers (CPOs) has increased over the years in line with the rise in the number of cases managed by the Child Protective Service (CPS) and more are being hired to meet evolving needs. It is “not a job for the faint-hearted”, said Senior Parliamentary Secretary for Social and Family Development Eric Chua. He said the Service has to grapple with officers retiring or leaving prematurely, challenges in recruitment and the time needed for training. Mr Chua agreed with MP Louis Ng that the current caseload of about 40 per officer is “a little bit too high” but said there is no “magic number” given that cases can vary in complexity. He spoke in Parliament on Wednesday (Nov 22).
