Social mobility has been a key long-term outcome in the Government's programme to address inequality, said Senior Parliamentary Secretary for Social and Family Development Eric Chua. Replying to an MP’s questions in Parliament on Thursday (Jul 6), he said the Government’s policies consider how to best promote social interaction, including between different income groups in society. In the residential estates, it seeks to foster a good mix of socio-economic groups. It also ensures that the schools remain open and accessible to students from different socio-economic backgrounds. The Government also seeks to increase the social capital of those from low-income backgrounds. Mr Chua stressed the need for a whole-of-society effort to help low-income families as they work towards stability, self-reliance and social mobility.
